The History of FC Swan
In December 2006 I wrote to the Olympian league asking if it was possible to register a team within their league for the coming season 2007/08.
The first time I heard back from them was in late April 2007. I was given a deadline of 1 week to get everything the league needed to become registered.
The first obstacle I had to face was the naming the Team. (Which is always a good start!)
Thinking back to the days when I used to play, most teams were sponsored by pubs, how this has changed now, but without knowing this I asked our local pub which is the Swan if they would sponsor us, in return we would wear a kit advertising the pub name, take the players back their for drinks and Sunday lunch, the landlord was very enthusiastic on the prospect of this so I filled in the registration form and called us “FC Swan”.
A week later when everything had been finalised the brewery decided that it was not in their best interest to sponsor a Sunday team which made life a little difficult knowing that we need to get our hands on some money to help pay for the league registration, cups, the pitch fees and on top of that we needed training equipment and most importantly a kit.
We approached Hadden Business Solutions who decided to sponsor us after some negotiations and they offered to pay for the 2 kits and also the first installment on the pitch fees.
The race was then on to recruit players, to start with a lot of them came from Hadden Services and then it was friends of friends, before I knew it FC Swan had 25 registered players.
I would like to take this occasion to thank all of you for supporting the team through the good times and the bad and all the friends and family that have also been there with us on the touchline, at training and behind the scenes to get us through our first season.
So here we are FC Swan are officially part of the Olympian Sunday League and I hope this last for many years to come.
